People's Assembly Hall

It is a landmark of Chongqing City. This grand hall is located at Xuetian Wan, Renmin Road and is the largest auditorium in Chongqing. Completed in April 1954, the Assembly Hall was built for the accommodation and entertainment of domestic and overseas guests. The complex, with a capacity of about 4,200 seats, covers a total area of 66,000 square meters, with the great auditorium covering 18,500 square meters.

The Hall adopted the architectural style of the Ming (1368 - 1644) and the Qing Dynasties (1644 - 1911), which attached great importance to traditional symmetric structure. The complex is composed of an auditorium that models Temple of Heaven in Beijing and a South Tower and a North Tower as two wings. It's in perfect proportion and imparts a sense of majesty and solemnity.

The peacock-blue glazed tile dome supported by scarlet columns is the most glorious and magnificent part of the Hall looking from outside. After renovation in 2007, the inside dome is now adorned with 260,000 gold flakes, while other structures of the building are sculpted or decorated luxuriantly.

In front of the People's Assembly Hall is the granite-paved Renmin Square, where is a major recreational place of locals. With the People's Assembly Hall stands in the exactly middle of the axle wire of the Square facing the west, another grand building in Chongqing is erected on the opposite side of this Square, which is the Three Gorges Museum. In the Museum, you can know a lot about the Three Gorges and the Dam project, and the culture of nearby region from great numbers of relics as well.
