Xi'an, used to be the eastern terminal of the Silk Road and the capital of several Chinese important dynasties, heavy with history legacy like millenniums-year-old Terracotta Warriors, impressive relic collections in museums, etc.

Xiamen map

This is an ancient capital that enjoys a longer history than any other ancient capital in China, with its imposing city walls, antique architecture and rich culture. Chinese people believe Xi'an (historically known as Chang'an) is the cradle of Chinese civilization, for it used to be the capital of thirteen dynasties, among which the Han (206BC – 220AD) and Tang (618-907) Dynasties were China's golden ages. Now there are more than 120 mausoleums of emperors surrounding Xi'an city, which perfectly hint at its profound history.

Xi'an is the starting point of the world renowned Silk Road. During the reign of Emperor Wudi in the Western Han Dynasty (202BC – 9AD), Chinese ambassador Zhang Qian was sent to visit the Western Regions, exploring the Silk Road as a bridge connecting the continents of Europe and Asia. At that time, Xi'an was the communication hub to the outside world, attracting continuous visits from a number of foreign ambassadors. The saying, "Rome in the West, Chang'an in the East", is the best description about the global position of Xi'an back then.

Xi'an's glorious past can be seen in every corner. Due to its history, the city preserves a lot of places of interest that fascinate tourists from both home and abroad. The emperors' mausoleums are must-sees. The Terra-cotta Warriors, a stunning mausoleum for Emperor Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor in Chinese feudal history, and his soldiers, gives visitors a strong feeling of solemnity. The Tomb of Emperor Jingdi, or Hanyang Tomb Museum, is the first modern underground museum in China that houses the graveyards of the Han Emperor Jingdi (157BC – 141BC) and his wife, as well as a large amount of buried treasures.

In terms of tourist attractions, Xi'an still has so many to offer. The City Wall, 13.7km long and 12m high, creates an inner section in this modern city and presents a scroll painting of vivid history with its size and beauty. The Forest of Stone Steles Museum, founded in 1090, houses more than 3,000 precious historical stone steles. The Big Wild Goose Pagoda is where the outstanding translator of sutras, Xuan Zang translated the Buddhist classics from ancient India. The Great Mosque is China's oldest, largest and most famous mosque.

During breaks from sightseeing, one should never forget to have a taste of the local snacks. Xi'an delicacies are mostly made of wheat flour. Pita Bread Soaked in Mutton Soup (Yangrou Paomo), Cold Noodle (Liang Mian), and Chinese Hamburgers (Roujiamo) are just a few of the delicious snacks that make visitors' mouths water.
