Zhangjiajie is located at northeast part of Hunan Province, about 307 kilometers away from Changsha, capital of Hunan. It covers an area of 9,563 square kilometers, 76% of which is mountainous area. It is also the home to 1.62 million population, 72% of which are ethnic minorities like Tujia, Bai and Miao nationalities.

The city consists of districts of Yongding (永定) and Wuling (武陵) and counties of Cili (慈利) and Sangzhi (桑植). Tianmenshan Forest Park in Yongding District, 8km away from the city, with its 1518 meter namesake peak, can offer you a real height experience. Wuling district is a large area covering the city's main draws and proud-earning site--Zhangjiajie, which is also known as Wulingyuan Scenic Area. The area includes the Zhangjiajie Forest National Park, Suoxiyu scenic area and Tianzishan, featuring the amazing concentration of quartz sandstone and karst formations, deep caves, serene valleys as well as the misty subtropical forest with rare plant and animal species. Wulingyuan was recognized by UNESCO as a natural heritage site in 1992. Moreover, the forest park was awarded the title of "World Geological Park" in 2004.

The booming Zhangjiajie tourism is backed up with a good transportation network. The Lotus Airport, 4km southwest of the city, connects with main China cities like Beijing, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Changsha, Dalian, Qingdao, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau and Thailand. And yet be prepared for the constant changes and cancellations. Long-distance Bus Station on Huaihua Road offers frequent departure to Changsha, Wuhan, Xian and Shanghai, etc. The train station, 8 km southeast of the city, runs to Changsha, Beijing, Yichang, Guangzhou, Zhanjiang, Wuxi, etc.
